Board Members
The Stan and Jan Berenstain Healthy Kids Foundation is a non-profit organization that is tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Section 501(c)(3). Contributions to it are tax deductible.
Mike Berenstain  Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears; eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to write and illustrate Berenstain Bears books from his studio in Pennsylvania.
Laura K. Diaz, MD Laura Berenstain, M.D. has primarily taken care of children with congenital heart disease during her nearly thirty years of practicing Pediatric Anesthesiology. She is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Laura has also participated in cardiac mission trips around the world, providing care and teaching physicians in other countries how to care for children with complex congenital heart disease. She is married to Mike Berenstain.
Sarah Berenstain  Sarah is the daughter of Mike and granddaughter of Stan and Jan and has carried on her family's interest in early literacy and learning into her professional life. Sarah graduated from the Art of Teaching program at Sarah Lawrence College with a Masters of Science in Education. Her thesis focused on how the arts allow children opportunities to connect school-based lessons to personal experiences. She has worked with many age groups, but is now focusing on Early Childhood Education. She is thrilled to be involved with the foundation; to honor her grandparents' work and extend her passion for helping kids. Alan Jay Schwartz, MD, MSEd  Dr. Alan Jay Schwartz is a Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Education and Program Director of the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Lynne Gerson Maxwell, AB, MD  Dr. Lynne Gerson Maxwell is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She is also the Diversity Search Advisor of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
